The Sephardic Diaspora 01 December 2025 à 00:35

Has anyone found an 18th century matzot recipe? I am hoping for it to be tied to the Amsterdam community, or at least within the western Sephardic communities. Part of this interest has to do with these records from the Portuguese Jewish community of Amsterdam about the Jews who were assisting bakers in making matzot. https://archief.amsterdam/inventarissen/details/334/path/5.2.8.2.1I also talk ab...

Last year, I used the IAJGS conference in London as an opportunity to do some serious family history tourism in London and Amsterdam. I made two videos about my trip, one about my time in London and the other about my time in Amsterdam - correlating the genealogy and history as I discuss my experiences meeting cousins and visiting ancestral locations. This trip focused heavily on my Sephardic ance...

**Dutch Nunes Vaz Family**Many know my main focus in research is the Nunes Vaz family, with a focus on finding living descendants. I decided to make a graph of the Dutch branch of the Nunes Vaz family, showing the descendants of Abraham Nunes Vaz (born circa 1670 in Livorno), which has 4600 family members. It was made using https://learnforeverlearn.com/ancestors/ and Canva. Adding in a line to re...

A walk through Esnoga and the Names Monument with Rob Nunes Vaz and Ton Tielen. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to record the entire walk and the audio gets a bit muffled at points, but a lot of interesting history is covered!

First full day of the IAJGS conference included the largest in person meeting of Sephardic genealogists in many years, many of whom (if not almost all) are part of this group.

Hello everybody! I am currently working at improving DNA tools for endogamous populations (such as Jewish populations) by testing some modified clustering algorithms for endogamous matches through GEDmatch. I have been working with Evert-Jan Blom, who developed the autocluster tool, and we came up with some settings (min average segment size, min amount of shared DNA between shared matches, etc) t...

A deep dive into the sources behind the claims about Moses Cohen Henriques and Abraham Cohen Henriques, as described in the book Jewish Pirates of the Caribbean by Edward Kritzler. A big Thank You to Ton Tielen for his research and assistance in providing documents for this video.

The stories of the origin of the Portuguese Jewish Community of Amsterdam are quite interesting, but how true are they? Ton Tielen joined me in this video to discuss these stories. I was recently contacted by a gentleman who has taken it upon himself to digitize and upload thousands of postcards and letters relating to Sephardic and Mizrahi Jewish communities. I myself have found dozens of letters and postcards for my Nunes Vais family in Italy and Libya. This collection seems to be mostly from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century but I have also seen a few images fr...

I descend from the Dutch branch of the Nunes Vaz family but there are also known branches in Livorno, Jamaica, and Suriname but no documented proof that they were the same family. In my newest video I discuss the research going into working to prove whether or not they are the same family, including an in-depth Y-DNA project.

My newest video discusses how the migration of Dutch Jews in the mid-19th century (Ashkenazi and Sephardi) led to the 8 hour work day. This video is part of #ProjectGenealogy, a collaboration between 7 genealogy youtubers where we all created a video around the topic of Migration.

I imagine many in this group who have researched the community in Amsterdam during the 19th century have used the Bevolkingregisters - and if you haven't, definitely check it out ([https://archief.amsterdam/indexen/index.nl.html](https://archief.amsterdam/indexen/index.nl.html)). In 1943 a Dutch resistance group led by Willem Arondeus, an openly gay artist and writer, bombed the public records off...

Amsterdam was a central hub within the Sephardic diaspora and the Amsterdam city archives holds countless documents about Sephardim all over the World. Many of the documents held here are discussed on a daily basis within our group. The documents in the city archives are available for free online (http://archief.amsterdam), but for anyone who does not speak Dutch the website can be a bit burdensom...

While researching the Livorono community I found this interesting chart towards the end of the record book Serie Deliberazioni Unità 4SGov3. I am curious if anyone can give further insight into this. It seems to have something to do with tombstones but I see names listed multiple times. I think this may be of special interest to some as a lot of de Medina family members are listed, a family which ...
